Christian Seva Sangha welcomes K’tak CM’s move to drop caste tags in Christianity

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the removal of Hindu prefixes from Christian caste names, following objections raised by Christian Seva Sangha (CSS). The move comes after criticism that the government was fuelling caste divisions within the Christian community.

CSS president Shaji T Varghese, who had petitioned the CM, the Backward Classes Welfare Minister, the Chief Secretary, and the State Backward Classes Commission, said it was “unfair” to impose caste structures on Christians.

“It is not right for the government to create a caste system in Christianity. Our faith does not recognise caste. This move appeared like a conspiracy to divide Christians,” Varghese said, welcoming Siddaramaiah’s order.

Sources in the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission said amendments are now being considered in line with the CM’s directive.

Expressing confidence, Varghese added that the government must ensure Christians are not treated unfairly in the ongoing caste survey.
